As writers there is nothing better that we’d like to know more about than where we can find more writing opportunities. Which is why this post gives you a list of places where you can showcase your work; you may or may not get paid for it but it will certainly help you get your foot in the door.

* Readers Digest

Readers Digest is a premier publication with 50 editions in 21 languages and enjoying world wide readership. Their stories include real life instances of heroism, grit and determination. If you have a non-fiction story to share then you can reach the editorial department at indiard@gmail.com. You can also submit jokes and comic capers. Simply log on to rd-india.com and explore your options.

* Chicken Soup for the Soul Series

Do you have a funny, exciting or sad story to tell? You can send it to the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series. Beginning January 2010 the only way you can send in your story is by website submission at www.chickensoup.com. It could be about your life or somebody else’s but it must stir readers with joy or move them with sorrow. If your story is selected you will be paid $200 and receive ten free copies of the book in which your poem or story is published. You can refer to the website for story guidelines but here are a few to begin with…a 300-1200 word story or poem that begins with action, ends with a lesson and comes straight from the heart.

* EzineArticles

If you are a writer seeking massive exposure then EzineArticles is where you will find it. Functioning as a liaison between authors and publishers it is one place you should try if you want to get noticed. Sign up for a free basic membership to send in your first 10 articles and do check out the guidelines for authors before sending in your work to EzineArticles.com Article Writing and Marketing System.

* Writersconnect

A place for poets and authors to interact and connect, Writersconnect now invites flash fiction contributions from writers. “Snapshots” invites articles up to 500 words from anywhere in the world.

* E-how

E-how is a great “how to” resource for anyone who wants to know more about the nitty gritty of the simplest to the most complicated things in the world. If you have knowledge or expertise to share in any arena then E-how is an excellent place to showcase it. All you have to do is sign up for a membership and start contributing. The website currently pays for contributions from authors under a scheme which is targeted at US citizens with valid tax registration.

* How Stuff Works

If you have the ability to break down complex subjects, can write in an engaging and entertaining style in clear, simple language then freelance writing opportunities on a project to project basis are available at “How Stuff Works”. You can apply by sending a resume with two relevant non-fiction articles to freelance@howstuffworks.com.

* Travel Post Monthly

All you travel writers out there looking to get in touch with reputed publishers, here is a place where you can exhibit your writing skills. Travel Post Monthly does not pay contributors but it links you with publishers from across the globe. Send in your contributions under different sections like “How To” (travel advice and tips), “On the Calendar” (local festivals and events) and “What’s Hot” (latest trends) in 50-300 words and “Destinations” (holiday locale descriptions), “Dining” (eating out options) and “Overnight” (short stay options) in 100-600 words.

Once you get started do let us know of any new places where writing opportunities exist. We’d definitely like to hear about them.
