Bloggers Turn Authors

in Career Tips for Writers

Are you an avid blogger who has dreamt of writing your own book one day? If a “novel” beginning is what you want as an author then here are a few instances of others who have traveled that path recently….

Sheece Baghdadi, a technical writer started out with writing a blog to assuage his own creative urges. Today with “102 Days to Go” he  is one book old and is furiously penning his  second one. Sheece attributes his literary success to his endeavors at blog writing which gave him the confidence to write besides strengthening his  writing skills and style.

Software engineer turned web entrepreneur, Sandeep Gautam had written a small part of his novel “The Sculptor and the Sandman”, with a storyline built around psychosis before he began blogging. Intrigued by cognitive psychology and neurosciences it was only natural for him to blog about the subject. However it was only after he started blogging that Sandeep was able to turn his idea about two friends with divergent views about life trying to find meaning within the travails of modern day existence in to a book. Spurred by his successful tryst with blogging and his debut novel he is now writing a sequel.

You don’t have to have a technical qualification or research background in the area that you blog about. Simply enjoying what you do by penning your experiences in life could put you on the road to writing professionally as well. That’s what Preeti Shenoy discovered when her blog about her life and experiences was subscribed to by over 500 people. Her book “34 Bubblegums and Candies” was adapted from her numerous blog posts, a compilation of some real life incidents hilarious, moving, thought provoking and more importantly so much like the lives of many readers. Preeti is currently working on a full length fiction novel.

If one were to seriously think about any of these examples we would discover that as bloggers we all have the innate ability to engage others with what we write about. With little restrictions in respect of the subject matter of our blog posts we are free to let our creative juices flow on anything under the sun. However we could do well to exercise a little caution as we turn to serious writing. While there have been many instances of many a blogger becoming a successful book author there are just as many if not more bloggers who make the quintessential error of simply turning their blog posts in to books. While blogs in themselves may prove to be engaging when complied in to books they may not hold the same allure. The result needless to say is a novel which is not well received. This is why one may draw inspiration from the experience narrated in a blog but never can rely on it completely while writing a book. Instead one must make a serious attempt at writing to ensure that our literary attempts give readers the feel of a book not that of a blog. Guard against recycling for a compilation of blog posts under a book cover is just old wine in a new bottle. Use your blog as a window to communicate with readers at large and find what gets people interested. Don’t use it as a public relations vehicle to sell your literary ventures.

If handed well and wisely blogging could be your stepping stone in to the literary world. So what are you waiting for?
