Recession Proof Career Advice for Writers

in Career Tips for Writers

A plum project for an overseas company that gave you immense creative and monetary satisfaction just came to an abrupt end.

How many of us have faced a situation like this recently?

Nobody said tiding over a recession would be easy but then again, it’s not impossible to find work despite the dismal existing scenario. Here’s how freelance writers can recession proof their careers:

  • Teach others to write: As writers each one of us has our own forte. This could be the right time to use your expertise in ad copywriting, fiction, story writing, or developing content for the web to develop a course that could be sold online. Websites like Chillibreeze have a few online writing courses authored by writers from the Chillibreeze network. Check them out to come up with ideas for your own course or else enroll in one to hone your writing skills.
  • Look towards the education sector: There are some sectors that remain untouched by recession and education is one of them. You can look for opportunities here that will help you stay in touch with writing. Publishers are always looking for good authors to write textbooks and reference books for various courses. So if you’ve worked in the field of advertising then a handbook on advertising doesn’t sound too farfetched. Self-help books on topics like resume writing, essay writing or report writing usually fly off the shelves pretty quickly which is why those of us who know a thing or two about doing these with a difference could write one. Tech savvy students are in sync with e-books and journals hence it wouldn’t be a bad idea for a couple of writers to collaborate on such endeavors.
  • Network and “work” shop: Most Indian cities have been taken over by workshop mania. Conducting weekend workshops in writing for kids, teenagers and adults is a good way to share your knowledge and make some money. A couple of hours over the weekend will help you to get to know so many people. You have to try it to discover what a great stress buster it is. Local writers’ networks like Chillibreeze can serve as a great meeting place for writers from the same city with similar expertise who could conduct writing workshops together.
  • Provide professional writing services to the common man: There will always be some people like students who struggle with research projects that are an inherent part of their curriculum. There could be others who struggle with writing letters and reports. How about setting up a professional venture that does writing and/or editing for them?
  • Scan developing markets for opportunities: Recently I read an article about a buoyant market for kids’ fiction writing in India. There is also growing interest in indigenous Indian management practices. Look for lucrative areas like these to add to your repertoire.

Lastly, I would say reinvent yourself. Most of us know Farhan Akhtar began his career with film direction, and then went on to act and sing. He’s an excellent example of reinvention – something that all of us must do in order to realize our full potential as writers.

So get started with recession proofing your career! Good Luck!
