Chennai Writers’ Meet: A Successful Start
Chillibreeze, a reputed content and design firm, hosted its first Writers’ Meet on March 27, 2010 in Chennai. The Meet was presided over by the distinguished Chief Guest, Dr Abel Rajarathinam, a doctor with a passion for writing and a desire to share his rich experiences in the field of medicine through E Books. The event, which was attended by 15 participants, was co ordinated by Jayshree Bose, the co ordinator of the Chennai Chapter.
The objectives of the Meet were (1) to introduce Chillibreeze to the participants and discuss services on offer that would help freelancers and other writers to establish themselves and showcase their work (2)enable Chennai-based writers, both members of Chillibreeze and non members to meet, interact and share their views with each other (3) discuss some of the company’s recently –launched products and services such as Chillibreeze Assessments, Chillibreeze Expert Review and E Book Services, and explain why these products are highly useful resources and tools that help writers evaluate themselves and assist them in the job market, as well (4) throw open the discussion for active participation involvement where participants could voice their needs and offer suggestions, and (5) get feedback about the Meet through a survey.
The Meet, which was conducted in an informal, friendly manner, encouraged very active interaction from the participants. After the agenda discussions were over, the guests were encouraged to come up with their suggestions, many of which were valuable. Among these suggestions were:
- The Chief Guest Dr Rajarathnam suggested that writers like him, who were interested in bringing out books where he could document his lifetime experiences through the Chillibreeze E publishing services, could be provided with mentors to take them through the whole process.
- One of the participants suggested that translation services be introduced in addition to editing and other services
- Participants suggested that since they would also be interested in knowing how they stand vis-a-vis other writers, the evaluation process should show not just grades and percentages, but the percentile, as well.
- Yet another suggestion was that a social networking Group be set up on the lines of Facebook and the Linkedin Writers’ Group for Chillibreeze writers
- While most participants wanted online meets to be conducted through chats, e mails and discussion boards, most of them also wanted to meet through offline Meets, since it lessened the solitary feeling that was typically part of a freelancer’s life.
- Among other proposals was one to conduct seminars and Meets where guest speakers from relevant fields were invited to deliver talks
The meeting ended on a convivial note amidst refreshments. The Chief Guest quipped that the refreshments were good, but the explanation of the company’s products and resources were even better! The Meet ended with participants deciding to meet frequently and be in touch with each other at other times.
