The Writer Meet chapter at Kolkata was held at the Oxford Bookstore on April 3rd 2010. Over 30 people attended, some experienced freelance writers while others just starting out in the field. The event began with an introduction to Chillibreeze by the coordinator Shreya Sanghani.
The writers discussed the products and services offered by Chillibreeze, how to submit samples and write for Chillibreeze to get project offers. The participants were informed about the new offerings on the anvil – the Chillibreeze writing and editing assessments, expert review services, Children’s Workshop and the online community forums.
Discussions ranged from the process of establishing oneself as a freelance writer, the need to have non exploitative markets for Indian freelance writers, how to pitch for work, starting out as a freelance writer, how to write your sample for Chillibreeze and be included in the preferred writers’ section, why having a sample is important, the need to have online as well as offline regular communication and networking with the writing community and if they could have help publishing their books The attendees briefly took the floor and some of them talked about their own experiences as freelance writers and shared tips about how to make the process better.
Many of the writers wanted active participation and networking both online and offline, while others voiced the need for more workshops and seminars in Kolkata. Still others wanted to know if Chillibreeze could help with finding a publisher and working with an editor in person instead of offline. The meet ended with the writers networking over refreshments and expressing a desire for more offline events and online networking.
