Write Meet managed to warm the spirits of the enthusiastic writers who made it despite the dropping mercury levels on the foggy Delhi winter morning.
The inaugural Chillibreeze Write Meet was held on the 4th of January 2009 at the Defence Services Officer’s Institute in Delhi. The Meet provided freelance writers with an opportunity to interact and network, discuss and share writing related developments and present their work through the Chillibreeze platform. It was attended by 24 writers from diverse fields. The Writers were given a Chillibreeze Write Meet Welcome Kit with a folder, an id tag, handouts of the presentations and a feedback and contest form. The meet was organised by Pallavi Rao and Priya Kaushik and coordinated by Priya Kaushik and CB writer Mridula Murgai.
The event kicked off with an exciting ice breaker networking game that helped set the ball rolling and got the writers acquainted.
Guest speaker Mridula Murgai, a freelance writer and the editor and originator of the first website for Indian Women spoke about ‘Writing for Women’. The talk touched upon writing for a target audience, style of writing and the importance of touching women’s hearts. The talk generated a discussion about whether women are being stereotyped and about whether writing for women is any different from writing for men.
This was followed by Writer’s Reading Sessions where Reena Batra, a wellness and travel writer, presented on peace of mind and the importance of leading a balanced life. Her tips on relaxation were well received.
To wind up the reading session was a humorous piece on writing one’s own Obituary by Mohinder Bhatnagar, which had the audience chuckling.
Abha Iyengar presented two flash fiction stories and answered questions on the differences between a flash fiction piece and a short story and how flash fiction is still a nascent genre in India.
Next, a presentation on Chillibreeze by Priya Kaushik took the writers through the plans for 2009 and invited suggestions from writers on events planned for the year. Features like Write Match, Course creation and the epublishing section of Chillibreeze were of particular interest to the writers.
A spot contest saw writer Lubinisha Saha bag a Crossword Bookstore gift voucher of Rs 500 for her winning tagline. Writers mingled over light eats and swapped suggestions with the Chillibreeze team on making the meet a regular event each quarter.
