The Chillibreeze Freelance Journalism Workshop conducted in Mumbai on 5th Sept at The Residency Hotel was a sold-out event.
The workshop conducted by renowned journalist and trainer Kavitha Rao was very informative and covered the basics of Freelance writing. The workshop was highly interactive and the participants were given lots of practical tips finding stories that sell pitching for articles, writing for the foreign media and negotiating pay scales.
The editor of Grazia India, Nandini Bhalla was the Guest Speaker at the Workshop. She conducted a session on Writing for magazines and what they look for in articles sent to their magazine. It was a very enjoyable session, where she answered questions from the writers on a variety of area including writing styles, commissioning articles for freelancers, how to approach editors. Her session was very well received and gave the participants an insight into the working of a magazine.

Writers had the opportunity to mingle with the trainer, the editor of Grazia and other writers during course of the Workshop.

- What does a freelance journalist really do?
- Finding fresh and original story ideas and writing a pitch or summary of your idea.
- Finding and researching markets, and tailoring your idea to your market
- The right way and the wrong way to approach editors
- Negotiating fees and rights: how to get the best possible deal for yourself
- Writing and interviewing, an overview
- Writing for the foreign media: What foreign editors are looking for from Indian writers.
- Common mistakes beginner writers make.
Trainer Profile: by Kavitha Rao is an established freelance journalist and trainer Her features have appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, the South China Morning Post, the Far Eastern Economic Review, Grazia India, the Hindustan Times, Mint and several others. She writes on current affairs, pop culture, travel, heritage, people, and anything else that interests her. She has conducted workshops on freelance journalism at the Times School of Journalism, Sophia Polytechnic, and the Kala Ghoda literary festival.
