You have the attributes and you know why you need to freelance. You also know there is really nothing ‘free’ in it either. You have the language and the style! Now probably is the right moment to go niche hunting .See if there is any ‘writing-field’ you like better than all the others .Yes it’s time, perhaps, to specialize! And when you specialize you must realize that you need to know everything there-is-to-know about that particular field.
And how would you do that?
By perfecting the other three Rs!
To Read, Research, and Remember- The tools that will without doubt help you carve a niche for yourself in the world of specialized freelance writing!
Read: Choose your field. Read up everything you can on the subject! Become an expert! The world of the wide web is yours for the tapping!
Research: Reading and researching go together. One without the other is work half undone! It will easily show up in your output. Researching is reading-extensively!
Remember: Retaining what you’ve read and researched is half the battle won! Using it effectively is the other half! And again, how do you do that? Simple! You couldn’t possibly remember everything! So make notes, mark passages. Save links, highlight them. Use Favorites or Bookmark them. Use ‘del.icio.us’ or whatever. They come in handy every time you need to look up something. Stock-pile them in folders in My Document or your email accounts. Date and name them. It’s easier to pull out.
Alright! You knew all that!
Well then, you are all set!
Find your niche
Today every known subject and medium from Arts, Science and Industry to specific Resume writing or Real Estate are yours for the asking! And with the Internet as your library you can just about specialize in any thing you fancy.
Carve out a niche for yourself-a subject you enjoy. Bone up on it. Choose a few untapped angles. And write! Float them around and about. Before long you would have ‘arrived’ and that’s a promise!
Confused about how to get going?
Print: Scout round for all the magazines and journals that deal with that subject.
Contact their editors. Talk to them. Write. Discuss .Throw up ideas. Send them samples!
Websites:Trawl the web. Surf, seek, email samples! Query, confer, write, and send!
The entire gamut of the writing world- divided broadly- below is yours for the choosing. Hit on one and start writing!
