Are recession blues getting to you? Is it possible to stay positive during this extremely trying phase? How can you keep the faith when your career nose pes or when the atmosphere at work can only be described as inert?
Though it’s not easy all of us can stay positive through recession if we follow some simple mantras:
- Whoever said, “Your attitude determines your altitude” was right. Soar like an eagle instead of scurrying around like a chicken or sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich. Look beyond your city or industry for opportunities if need be. Remember, no matter what the situation, you choose your attitude.
- A little introspection never hurt anyone. So take a step back and ask yourself some questions. While it’s easy to get bogged down by gloom during a recession it’s equally important to focus on “what’s next”, invest in yourself and bounce back.
- Simplify your career expectations and you’ll be surprised at how it will help you discover newer career opportunities. For instance all of us know Larry King as a successful talk show host but very few of us know that he’s someone who’s survived a very turbulent career. From a high profile columnist with the Miami Herald to interviewer at a friend’s deli he went on to host a national radio talk show only to file for personal bankruptcy afterward. If you’re wondering about the key to Larry’s success it all boils down to his ability to keep his focus, try new things and more importantly not allow himself to become cynical.
- Make yourself employable at work by volunteering to take up tough or risky projects that others may not take up. Even if the project is unsuccessful your willingness to do challenging work will be noticed. Besides you’ll benefit from the interactions, exposure and training which usually come along with such tough assignments.
- Trust your passions. Michael Dell set out to sell computers he was only 19. When asked why he thought he could do it he simply said “No one told me I couldn’t”. There’s a lesson in here for all of us. We must believe in ourselves.
- Sometimes a dramatic change turns out to be the best career transformation. When J.K. Rowling the now famous creator of the Harry Potter phenomenon was fired from her secretarial job it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to her. She used the time off to pen her first Harry Potter book and there has been no looking back for her ever since.
- All of us have some measure of creativity within. All we need to do is use our creative vision. Would you believe Walt Disney the visionary behind Disneyland, Mickey Mouse, movies and many other creative ventures was fired from his job with a newspaper for lack of creativity when he was just starting out? So put on your thinking cap and figure out what else is there that you can do and get paid for. Teach a foreign language, train people in public speaking and give lessons in writing skills for children or coach professionals wanting to become writers in your neighbourhood.
- Most of us spend a better part of our lives making investments in property, stock markets and the like. Your biggest investment should be in yourself so use the time to do something you always wanted to. If you always wanted to become an ad copywriter then thanks to the internet you now have the option of taking an online course that could open up a new avenue for you. Some websites like Chillifreeze in India, offer so many courses you can do while at home, all you need to do is identify your area of interest and get cracking.
- Use the extra time on hand to cook your favorite meal, exercise and volunteer. You’ll be surprised at just how cathartic these simple tasks can be. After all, a happy writer is a much better writer!
Do you have any ideas about how one can stay positive through recession? Do write in with them.
