Are they of any use? It would appear so!
Everyday new techniques, new formats, new editing practices come into being. They gradually become the accepted norm if found to be useful and practical. Yes, you have the language and you have the skills but like everything else in life these skills also need to be polished, honed and refreshed, once in awhile, to keep pace with shifting trends and changing times.
What better way to do it than by enrolling for the right kind of course or workshops-online? Online courses it has been found help to achieve a refresher-breather without having to disturb one’s normal routine too much. They also impart the same kind of knowledge other regular professional colleges do at half the cost and a quarter the time. And they can be done at-anytime- in one’s life!
Choosing the right kind of course is half the battle won. A well structured one will not only brush up one’s latent talents and refurbish stagnant thoughts it could also refresh and rekindle a set-in-a-routine-mind to accept innovative ideas.
It could also help you to try out new niches, new subjects, and new fields of writing. If into creative writing till now, you might find you have a penchant for a different kind of genre as well, say script or tech. Assignments in different kinds of writing may even force you to do a rethink on where your writing career is heading and where you‘d like it go.
Learning how to accept criticism, how to effectively use language to promote, communicate and critique ideas are among some of the things one learns from a good course or workshop apart from correct sentence-structure, grammar, style, clarity and other writing specifics.
Analyzing, assessing and evaluating works of other writers’ along with similar comparative studies- which almost all well structured courses teach- will not only help hone your writing skills but also your mental capacity to accept new thoughts, methods and parameters.
In order to write well, it is necessary to write often and yes on perse topics. Unless you are part of an online writing community which indulges in ‘exercises’ and ‘critiquing’, online courses/workshops seem to be the only other alternatives that could help you get some well informed impartial evaluation of your own writing even while learning innovative writing practices. An informal add on to a university curriculum, going beyond the scope of a rigid syllabus, they could be invaluable even while in college and definitely out of it.
Churning out pieces day in and day out, to keep the home fires burning, you could be stuck in a rut! And you may not think it worth while, branching out into new areas – perhaps lacking the expertise to do so. Online courses/workshops might just be the answer to that. It could imbue you with new confidence and a new capability to try your hand at new kinds of writing.
It could actually be the making of a new ‘writing’ you!
