Never Read Another Resume: Your Emails and Cover Letters May Get You Hired!

Jason Fried, co-founder of 37signals could not have said it better in his article, “Never Read Another Resume”

“Resumés reduce people to bullet points, and most people look pretty good as bullet points.

What we do look at are cover letters. Cover letters say it all. They immediately tell you if someone wants this job or just any job. And cover letters make something else very clear: They tell you who can and who can’t write. Spell checkers can spell, but they can’t write. Wordsmiths rise to the top quickly. Another rule of thumb: When in doubt, always hire the better writer.”

From the global world to the smallest office … it’s all about communication. Today people want to know if you can write. Can you express yourself in an email?

As Director of Chillibreeze Solutions Pvt. Ltd I am involved in hiring new staff at our headquarters in Shillong, North East India.

What do we do? We look at a person’s ability to write. The process begins when a candidate completes our customized online resume form. How does he/she answer pointed questions? If the online form looks good the next step in recruiting is to assess the candidates writing and communication ability. How do we do this? Our HR department sends the candidate the Chillibreeze Communication Assessment. The results of this assessment indicate, at a glance, a person’s ability to write.

Every email and each letter that is written represents our company – we take writing seriously – I highly recommend Jason Fried’s advice: Find out if the candidate can write! Try our Chillibreeze Assessments, an excellent tool for helping your HR department hire qualified staff.
