Trends in technology are forcing corporate entities to reinvent the art of communication. The old-fashioned means of communication – talking and listening are still effective in meeting business goals. However, changing times call for newer methods. Good communication is like common sense – made to look easy but not always so. This skill needs to be honed extensively especially considering the globalised economy in which we work.

Trends
I have been noticing a significant shift in the way people communicate today, both professionally and socially. Technology has altered the way we communicate. It sometimes seems like we have only just switched from face-to-face conversations to Email. But then, along came new technologies making even Email seem like an option for those who have not moved on!
Today interviews/professional conversations happen over applications like Gtalk or Skype. There are newer means of digital communication in the form of text messages, voice messages, SMS, MMS, instant messaging, VoIP, teleconferences and video conferences. Given this scenario, It is no longer required for all participants to be in the same room to discuss and close out deals. Everyone today has atleast one communication device handy – almost everyone is tethered to an electronic leash.

Challenges
As businesses use Email, teleconferencing, video conferencing, or even podcasts for internal and external communication, the conference table is now a virtual sight with several remote participants sharing information. Being gadget savvy alone is not sufficient. Several challenges accompany advancement in communication technology. Some of the challenges are :
- How to effectively communicate with clients and vendors via these channels
- How to improve effectiveness with global partners
- How to connect people with information and data
- How to complement words and reinforce ideas visually
- How to use social platforms like LinkedIn, Skype, Gtalk or other networks for meaningful business conversations
- How to identify areas of improvement and assist with appropriate training/skill building for employees
- How to validate written communication skills
For a company to be successful, the competence of an employee in written communication and basic language skills is of primary importance followed by training to use modern communication means.
