Till about 10 years ago, pre-hire assessment in India was restricted to resume reviews, conducting interviews and doing reference checks. However, over the years, Corporate India has realized the importance of being able to predict employee performance in order to ensure the right fit for the organization. In the coming years, with the workforce becoming increasingly globalized and with India leading this metamorphosis, assessment of employee skills and competencies and interpersonal and collaborative skills across different cultures will become a necessity to maintain the high standards of quality and productivity.
A number of important shifts are likely to be observed in the coming years. A few of these are discussed below:
Transactional tests: As more and more organizations opt for pre-hire assessments, the data generated will help to create a new generation of off-the-shelf tests that would be more accurate and comprehensive. The assessments will become transactional, with no prior background work required.
Consolidation of technology platforms: Currently, the available assessments are available on multiple technology platforms and vary with each service provider. There is likely to be a rationalization of technology platforms in the near future.
Industry Consolidation: The current pre-hire assessment industry is still at a nascent stage of development and is fragmented. New assessment providers are still coming up. However, within a few years, the industry is likely to see a wave of consolidation, with smaller players either falling back or merging with the bigger entities. The industry is also likely to move to a “one-stop-shop” model wherein end-to-end assessment solutions will be available for all skill packs and knowledge domains, including background screening.
Broad-basing of clientele: Today, most of the clients of pre-hire assessment solutions are big enterprises. With assessment solutions becoming more standardized and costs coming down, there is likely to be a proliferation of the use of these assessment solutions in the small and medium level enterprises.
Pricing Model: Most pre hire assessment service providers today charge their clients either on an annual basis or on a pay-per-use basis. This is likely to change to a revenue sharing model in the near future. Assessment results will be monitored through organization metrics and service providers will be paid based on the improvement in the business metrics that they bring about.
