Some of the key challenges of pre-hire assessment and testing are discussed below:
Inconsistent hiring processes: Hiring processes are inconsistent across the organization, making it difficult to arrive at definitive hiring parameters against which to measure suitability of a candidate. The skill sets and behavioral traits required in candidates should be defined and followed across all hiring in the organization.
Inefficient processes: The pre-hire assessment and testing industry is still at a nascent stage of growth in India. Consequently, the assessment processes are neither standardized nor well defined across organizations, leading to inefficiencies and huge overruns, both in terms of time and money. Technology – based pre employment screening may help to improve cost and timeliness in managing the hiring process.
High turnaround time: Pre-employment screening of candidates in India takes up a lot of time. The turnaround timelines for academic verification, for example, are dependent on the availability of the designated authorities for verification, policy changes in organizations, etc. In many cases, some organizations may refuse to divulge information of its ex-employees and result in a dead end for further investigation.
Lack of centralized and digitized databases: There is no central repository of personal and professional details of employees and candidates available today in India, making it difficult to verify the professional and educational credentials of candidates.
Limited Police Verification: Police verification of candidates is limited to the concerned jurisdiction only. Verification beyond the local jurisdiction is difficult to pursue and results in gaps in the background screening.
Cultural Sensitivities: In a country where many businesses still operate on trust and a system of networks and contacts and are driven by mindsets that are accustomed to hiding information rather than revealing it, it becomes a Herculean task to sell the idea of screening to local companies.
Lack of Legislation: In India, there are no laws or regulation on the service providers of background screening services. As the entry cost is very low, there are a lot of shady service providers in the market who provide unreliable and inferior services.
