Pre-hire assessments can add a lot of objectivity in your hiring process. However, one needs to understand and use these assessments properly to get the benefits you are really looking for. Some of the pre-requisites to a successful pre-hire assessment are discussed below:

Assessment Benefits: Before embarking on an assessment program, be absolutely sure in your mind what benefit you are looking for – is it reduced turnover, higher employee performance or are you simply looking to increase your hiring efficiency?

Job Analysis: It is important to fully understand the requirements of the job before you select an assessment program. What are the attributes that candidates should have that will help them to carry out the job well? What are the attributes you want to measure through your assessment program? Remember, each job is unique and the same assessment program will not do for all jobs.

Understand the Assessment Program: Study and understand thoroughly the assessment program. What are the attributes the assessment measures? What is the right way to administer the test? How to interpret the results correctly? Make sure that your assessment only measures attributes that have a direct bearing on the job performance.

Staff Training: The results of an assessment can be erroneous if it is not done the right way. Make sure that your staff is trained on the proper way to use the assessments and their results.

Consistency: Ensure that the assessment is used consistently for the same job across all candidates.

Monitor: Track the results of the program on a regular basis using pre-defined metrics like employee turnover, employee productivity, etc. Revisit the assessment program to fine tune and improve it.
