Travel writing is an interesting niche that involves writing about travel and destinations: guidebooks, promotional writing, reviews, travel blogs and more. The primary objective is to provide information that facilitates knowledgeable, economical, and comfortable ways for the reader to select, reach and enjoy the destination of his choice.

Hiring a travel writer
Getting hired as a travel writer is a mixed bag. Travel writing, as it is today, is a different ballgame. Being a travel enthusiast and having a way with words is not the answer to an all-expense paid trip to a charmed location, living out of a suitcase, savoring the local food and culture and getting paid to write about it. Ironically, more and more publications are hiring freelancers or interns to do actual travel features, while travel editors sit at a desk, gather “travel” experience and produce desk bound reports – thanks to the internet!
Basic types of travel writing
Travel writing is often a combination of experience and information. It can be broadly classified into:
- Writing travel related pieces based on actual travel and personal experience
- Research based travel writing that allows you to be an armchair traveler

The primary screening and pre-hire requirements for recruiting a travel writer:
Travel writing does require any formal education or degree except the desire to travel, explore, and write about it logically and clearly. With internet making inroads, travel experience is helpful though not always necessary.
General requirements
- Travel writing based on experience requires being passionate about travelling and having a sharp reporter’s eye to present data and facts
- For a research-based approach, writers are commissioned to write features or blogs on travel destinations by researching the internet and spending time within social media circles to come up with content

Training and Assessments
Travel writing is a craft that needs to be mastered. Travel writing is not just about mountains and monuments – it is about people, culture, places and the art of presenting it in a compelling form. Travel writing like any other form of writing can be learned on your own or through effective training programs; a good training program draws on the experience and knowledge of successful travel writers. An effective workshop or training program shows you how to capture the ideas, description, and imagery to write that perfect travel piece. Travel writing assessments can help validate your ability to transport your reader to the location he is reading about.
I have backpacked around India and am determined to keep going – I am just hoping a travel-writing job will help fund the trips!
