The Social Communications Media course at the Sophia Polytechnic, popularly known as SCM, was one of the first post-graduate mass communication courses to be established in India (1969). Sophia Polytechnic is recognized by the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra and was founded by the Society of the Sacred Heart with the aim of empowering women by providing them with a dynamic and caring environment for acquiring professional skills, through an education that is holistic, student-centered, value-based and creative in the pursuit of excellence.
SCM is open only to women students.

SCM has an impressive list of visiting faculty including Magsaysay award winning journalist P.Sainath (teaching at SCM for 20yrs), journalist and writer Jerry Pinto, film maker Leena Yadav (Director – Shabd), editor Deepa Bhatia (Taare Zameen Par, My Name Is Khan), Smruti Koppikar (Bureau Chief – Outlook Magazine), Television Producer Anjoo Daswani, Advertising guru Geeta Rao and cinematographer Ajay Noronha (KBC, Koffee with Karan, etc).
Other than this renowned panel, many industry stalwarts are brought in as guest lecturers. Past students have had the opportunity to interact with the likes of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Mansoor Khan, Raghu Rai, Ramachandra Guha, Piyush Pandey, Mira Nair, Sreenivasan Jain, Prahlad Kakkar and Amitav Ghosh.

PG Diploma in Social Communications Media: One year
Admission Information:
Application forms are available at the administrative office in the college as well as online beginning May every year. The last date for submitting filled applications is the 1st Friday of June.
Along with the application form and registration fee, interested candidates are required to submit a 500 word essay in their own handwriting on why they want to join SCM.
The SCM website updates all admission related information on a regular basis.
Entrance Examination
Shortlisted applicants will be called to Mumbai for a Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.
Written Test: Preparation for the entrance test only requires an awareness of current events as reported by the media and issues concerning the media. The written part of the test includes one question each on film, television, journalism and advertising. This is followed by a group discussion and a personal interview.

Hostel Facilities:
The Sophia Polytechnic Hostel reserves about 6-8 seats for outstation SCM students. Admission is on the basis of a personal interview.
Other Activities & Facilities:
The college boasts of state-of-the art audio and video equipment, editing facilities, computer labs, a DVD library and a comprehensive library of books on every subject related to media.
Annual practical projects include the making of video documentaries, promotional radio features, and ad-campaigns. All these projects are conceived, researched, written, produced and directed by the students with the guidance of experienced faculty members.
An annual exhibition showcases student projects – most notably a slide-sound presentation, short video films and a photography exhibit.
A ten-day optional photography tour allows the students to gain first -experience of the excitement of travel and photography.

Scholarships:
There are provisions for financial assistance. Details can be obtained in the prospectus or by contacting the Administrative office after admission.
Placements and Career:
At the end of the course, the college arranges for a one month internship program for all the students in areas of their interest and very often these internships result in full-time placements. Many media houses also contact SCM for placements on a regular basis.
SCM graduates have been around for almost 4 decades now and are found in almost every media organization in India and many abroad as well, and hold positions of leadership and management. Students of SCM have been employed by Star Plus, Sony Entertainment Television, Colors, Zee TV, The Hindu, Indian Express, Mid-Day, Hindustan Times, NDTV, Star News, Times of India, Times Now, CNN-IBN, Aaj Tak, O&M, Leo Burnett, JWT, MTV, Channel V, Miditech, Wizcraft, UTV, Genesis, White Light, Equinox, Coffee Communications, Yash Raj Films, Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani.

Many SCM alumnae have reached the top of their fields and have carved a name for themselves. These include Dilshad Master, Media Consultant (formerly Senior Vice-President, National Geographic Channel, India); Anupama Mandloi, Creative Director, Fremantle (Indian Idol); Priya Bhave Sharma, Creative Director, Sony Entertainment Television; Anjali Puri and Smruti Koppikar at the national magazine Outlook, and Radha Rajyadhyaksha and Nina Martyris at the Times of India. Hindi feature films have been directed by former students Leena Yadav, Reema Kagti and Deepa Bhatia.
