EFL-U started off as The Central Institute of English in 1958, the brainchild of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, to train English language teachers in India. In 1972 it became the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages. And in its latest avatar, EFL-U (English & Foreign Languages University) is today a deemed university in Hyderabad offering a variety of courses in English and multiple foreign languages.

Along with a variety of courses and departments, EFL-U boasts of various ‘schools’ within the campus that are devoted to specialized fields of study. One of these is the ‘School of Communication Studies’ that consists of the following departments:

1. Department of Media and Communication

2. Department of Journalism and Mass Communication

3. Department of Film Studies and Visual Communication

The university has on its faculty, some of the most renowned scholars in the field of English, Foreign Languages and Mass Media. Visiting guest lecturers often take classes on a variety of subjects that are not necessarily a part of the prescribed syllabus in an effort to constantly broaden the scope of English and Communications.

Prominent visitors have included scholars like Noam Chomsky, Michael Halliday, Richard Kayne, Paul Kiparsky, John McCarthy, Peter Ladefoged, Andre Marinet, Nina Catach, H G Widdowson, C J Brumfit, R A Allright, Wilga Rivers, Braj Kachru, Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand, S Pit Corder, Akeel Bilgrami, Jean Aitchison, E C G Sudarshan, Ladislav Zgusta, Stephen Greenblatt, A K Ramanujan, Nissim Ezekiel, Upendra Baxi and U R Ananthamurthy

Courses Offered:

The university offers two kinds of M.A degrees for students interested in Media and Communications:

Specialized M.A, where you specialize in the area of your choice: M.A in Linguistics/ Media and Communication/Literary and Cultural Studies, etc.

Bracketed M.A, For example: M.A in English (Media and Communication), M.A in English (TESL), etc. Your area of specialization will be written within brackets, hence the name ‘Bracketed M.A.’

Beginning this year, the University has also started a B.A. (Hons) in Mass Communications and Journalism.

The Shillong Campus also offers a Diploma in Mass Communications.

Eligibility:

For B.A – Entrance Test and Pass in Intermediate/+2

For M.A – Entrance Test and Pass in B.A/Graduation

For Diploma – Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

Admission Information:

Application forms can be obtained from the Publications Unit, The EFL University, Hyderabad 500007 on payment of Rs 520 (Rs 260 for SC/ST/Persons with Different Abilities on production of proof) in cash or in the form of a DD drawn in favor of Registrar, EFL University payable at Hyderabad. Write “Request for Application” on envelope and specify Program of Study. Forms can also be obtained from the Lucknow Campus or the Shillong Campus.

Entrance Examination

The entrance test is usually held in the month of May/June in multiple centers across India and model test papers can be downloaded from the EFL-U website a month prior to that.

Hostel Facilities:

The University has four hostels meant for regular students (Men and Women) with rooms on a sharing basis. The hostel facilities are ONLY for outstation students registered for a ‘full time’ program on campus. The university does not promise accommodation to every participant admitted.

Other Activities & Facilities:

The University has state-of-the-art language labs, libraries, computer labs, and electronic reading facilities for students with special needs.

It also has a large number of activities to offer in the form of Film Clubs, Theatre Clubs, Students Magazine, Alumni Association, etc. EFL-U is also famous for celebrating its cultural diversity through Christmas get-togethers, Iftaar parties, Ugadi celebrations, etc.

Scholarships:

There are provisions for financial assistance. Details can be obtained in the prospectus or by contacting the Administrative office.

Placements and Career:

EFL-U has a Campus Placement Cell that organizes campus interviews at the end of each academic year. Interested students can register with the Cell and get regular information on employment opportunities. A large number of students have found reputable careers and jobs with renowned government organizations as well as MNC’s through the placement cell.
