I recently read this really interesting book, not as famous as Enid Blyton or the Harry Potter series, but it was a really good read. Some parts of the book were so exciting that I shivered, goose bumps popping up everywhere on my body. In the sad parts I felt as depressed and agonized as the main character himself. In the funny parts I rolled on the floor, howling with laughter. And in the battle scenes, I was gripped with tension, unsure if the hero would win or not. It was a gripping and enjoyable read, and it absolutely took me in. And that book, the totally gripping and exciting, enjoyable and humorous book, whose author is anonymous, is ‘Charlie Small – The Barbarous Brigands of Frostbite Pass’.
This particular book is the sixth in the Charlie Small series, all of which make for exhilarating reading. The books feature an eight year old boy named Charlie Small, who once went rafting in a lightning storm. He was struck by a lightening bolt, yet unhurt, Charlie was transported to a different world, where he had to overcome serious tragedies to find his way back home. Now Charlie is four hundred years old but still looks like a normal eight year old boy. In this book, Charlie fights a swamp monster, helps save Christmas, rides on reindeers and much, much more.
I like this book very much because it is extremely adventurous, quick witted, fast moving and just absolute fun. The characters in the book are really vivid and descriptive. It has really neat sketches and drawings and pictures featuring enormously weird contraptions and inventions. It is an adventurous kid’s dream book, having everything he or she ever wanted to believe in; magic and adventure, humor and crazy inventions.
Four of my favorite characters in this fun-filled book are: Charlie Small (obviously), Belcher, Mamuk and Jakeman. Charlie is an intrepid boy, who longs to be a great explorer, using his courage and wit to escape from sticky situations- like getting caught by a really nasty, double-crossing band of ‘brigands’, or thieves. The boss of the brigands, Belcher, is another really interesting character. He is a bully, with a really big belly, and loves to kidnap people. He has an eye for treasure or ‘tresha’ as he calls it and is dangerous if you don’t do what he wants. Mamuk the reindeer herder, or Santa Claus as we know him, makes a key appearance in the book with his jolly face, trusting eyes and loyalty to Charlie. He tells Charlie the way to his best friend and the only person who knows how to take him back home: Jakeman the inventor. He is a crazy inventor and in every single book, whether Charlie knows it or not, he helps him with one of his marvelous inventions. Jakeman is a kind man, with a huge mustache and a longing to invent crazy things.
The Charlie Small books are an amazing series, for anyone with a taste of adventure. And if you do read these books, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Charlie’s wonderful adventures.
