As Google and Scribd get ready to challenge Amazon, the publishing industry is set to undergo a metamorphosis. A Forrester report predicts the following timeline for eBook adoption:
2007-2009: E-reader adoption is driven by early adopters.
2009-2011: More mainstream consumers buy e-readers and the $199 price point is breached.
2011 +: Video and color appear and the $99 price point becomes reality.
An interesting observation is that China and India are expected to be the real drivers for text book market.
Sarah Rotman Epps of Forrester digs into Scribd strategy about tapping into new areas by expanding content beyond books and enabling social interaction. She feels Scribd could become the Tunecore of publishing.
Google knows and is expected to tap into emerging markets like India, China and Brazil.
Amazon is apparently experimenting with the idea of embedding the reader in the eBooks. It has slashed the price of Kindle by $60 recently.
Meanwhile publishers are in a fix about pricing and launch of eBooks, many top players avoiding launch of new works in eBook formats. However, 14 out of the Top 15 fiction books on the July 19 New York Times best-seller list are available in eBook format.
