eBook Readers and Publishers in India: Is There Potential?

eBooks can be distributed in many formats – Chillibreeze publishes them as PDFs which can be read off your computer screen. Amazon offers its own special version of eBooks which can only be read on a ‘Kindle’, which is an eBook reading device that works only in the US. Have you seen what it looks like? Like a hand held calculator with a large screen!

Amazon introduced the first version of Kindle in 2007 and in February of 2009 Kindle 2 was launched – with more memory, sharper image and quicker page turns. Of course this is one electronic gizmo that cannot be purchased in the US and used in India, as it needs its own wireless network which is presently available only in the US. With a Kindle reader you can download eBooks from the Amazon website with ease. Sony too has launched its own eBook reader called PRS-700 in late 2008. Both are pricey, at around $ 350 to $ 400 a piece.

Who would have thought that a screen would replace the feel of paper between your fingers! Dog eared books are part of my library – much read and much loved! Thanks to technology, the lending library I use is a virtual one where I can order my books online. There is a certain excitement in waiting for your book – the longer the wait, the higher the excitement when you get the book on hand! I wonder whether downloading in ’60 secs’ (as claimed by the makers of Kindle) and racing through a book will be incentive enough to look at a hand held eBook readers as as an option!

But I know that the writing is on the wall – the era of eBooks is here to stay. Even our very own Chillibreeze has begun offering ePublishing services! Maybe you will publish your first book (rather an eBook) on Chillibreeze!

Tell me, would you like to see your first eBook published as a PDF or as a Kindle friendly version? Do you think that hand held eBook readers like Kindle and PRS-700 will become popular in India? For that matter will PDF eBooks become a popular read? Look forward to hearing from you!
