This is path breaking!

Penguin Group has signed an eBook distribution agreement with Chinese firm Founder Apabi to make eBook titles in English available in China by May 2009. China is a huge market with mobile ownership and the eBooks will be made available in Apabi’s Chinese eBook (CEB) format.

The London Book fair saw eBooks taking centre stage. The US markets have seen a surge in eBook sales. In China, sales of eBooks have grown fast across categories. China has nearly 79 million eBook readers. Read China and its eBook growth story.

Majority of the Indian publishers still believe eBooks are not the way Indians would like to read, at least not for a decade. But there is a generation which depends on mobiles and internet for all information and this segment of population is a difficult market to ignore.

In India 75% of the population is below 40 years. Internet and mobile usage is high amongst the young. Indians are familiar with English language. The market characteristics are right for launch of an eBook reader in India and that is sure to change how young Indians read.
