People could meet in two, three, four different countries in a single day. With online conferencing, you don’t travel, but you do meet. No more guessing who’s saying what. Just like real meetings, you can hear, see and understand everyone and this is called Video conferencing. In a corporate or in an institution to setup a simple video conferencing solution this article gives an idea of how to select the corresponding video conferencing product from the market.
Competitive edge, sharpened. Many video conferencing products are available in the market for individual and for corporate use. But a product’s cutting edge of the video conferencing technologies proves only by the performance in the corporate level applications. Tandberg,Polycom,Sony,Aethra,Cisco,Vcon,Halo,Hearme,Megameeting, Myglobalcam (web conferencing features),Dylogic,Lifesize are some of the leading video conferencing products for the corporate level. Below are the details which are given by taking the middle level models in all the brands and explained its features and performances.
- SONY has the latest video standards and capable of connecting more no of locations through multi-point video conferencing. In Sony, different models support different video formats. For eg. Sony has an individual product for NTSC and for PAL. Some products are specific only for IP and some for ISDN.If we need to have both IP based and ISDN in a system, separate 6 BRI line unit has to be purchased.
- POLYCOM has more no of inputs and outputs for connectivity. It has the feature of video and audio error concealment though which it increases the quality of video and audio during the video call is in progress. It has the capability of transferring good amount of fps (frames per second) at a lower bandwidth. It has partnered with Microsoft and many SIP support features have been achieved. It has the serial control port connectivity through which many of the functions of the unit can be controlled.
- TANDBERG has the higher audio quality in and out voice during video conference call. The system can be controlled through wireless LAN and it has the feature of Intelligent Packet Loss Recovery (IPLR).It can able to capture, send and receive the images during video call. It also has the feature of Down speeding concept where it maintains and compensates good amount of bandwidth in all the lines during multi point video conferencing.
- AETHRA has the feature of connecting more no of sites in a lower bandwidth. It has more no of camera presets. It has the feature of AeCPM for IP error recovery. It has the feature of online chat during video call.
- CISCO has the feature of withstanding good video conferencing quality when multiple sites have been connected. Each endpoint in a videoconference can participate according to individual video bandwidth capabilities without affecting the connection of other participants. As part of the latest release of multipoint control unit (MCU) software, Cisco Systems now offers customers the ability to integrate video into their voice communications solutions. Cisco Call Manager Version 4.0 introduces a video baseline that includes support for Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) and H.323 video and gives the same administration and user experience for voice and video services. Cascaded conferences can be centralized in the data center or geographically distributed to more efficiently use WAN bandwidth
- DYLOGIC’S product is a network element enabling the connectivity between 3G and IP networks. It supports industry standard protocols including ISUP or PRI interfaces, and interoperates with all 3G handsets and terminals.It connects H.323 and SIP IP domains with H.324M 3G networks enabling new services like PC to 3G video calls or a wide range of interactive 3G VAS applications such as video mail, video portal, video call center, video blog, video chat, video dating and many others. PSE 3G Gateway is being tested and used with a full range of terminals obtaining the best audio and video quality from any 3G handset and preserving DTMF tones support.
- Most of the LIFESIZE’S products are high definition video communication products where it is a newer trend which is evolving now in video conferencing products. It is based on the latest H.264 standard and provides H.263 support for interoperability with all standards-based video communications systems. Support for video bandwidth from 128Kbps up to 5 Mbps.
- The VCON is not only accurately reflects the multicast bandwidth usage, but also gives the administrator a control to limit the bandwidth for such conferences (per user). A multipoint videoconferencing bridge that can be configured up to 64 ports per server. Participants can have data rates up to 4Mbps in either voice-activated or up to 384Kbps in continuous presence conferences. There is no limit to the number of ports that can be on the network.

There are many other software video conferencing products are available in the market which we need to install in the PCs and make video calls (Web conferencing features). Hearme, Megameeting, Myglobalcam are some in the list. For a normal individual home video conferencing, Yahoo messenger and other online messengers can be used.
Hence for a good video conferencing capability with good performance of video,audio,PC sharing ,maintaining optimum bandwidth during multi point video calls, have adequate no of making connectivities,should withstand the video call when the bandwidth slows down or gets low, has to support all its functions and features when we integrate with other control system like Crestron,has to be controllable through LAN and most of all these features fit in to Polycom which is the best of among these video conferencing products.
