This is the first book I read of the author so i really can not make a statement …but one thing is for sure the book leaves you with a blissful feeling.
Though there is no novelty in the story …a small town girl in the pursuit of becoming a samba dancer ends up as a prostitute…succumbing to hostile unyielding world. She dreamt of everthying so obvious a big house, a loving husband and a happy life and that all too being a samba dancer. But as luck would have it other wise, she did become samba dancer for a club, opening her legs for those 11 minutes. The Moral dilemma she overcomes before going to the task for the first time depicts the mindset of numerous prostitiues who see it just as an other occupation. This is where the strength and tenacity of the character takes the centerstage …
What could have well been a saga of regret and agony for the girl having shunned the peaceful environs of her home to fulfill her dreams ..turned out otherwise ..The protagonist not only takes it in her stride but also tries to perfect her art….. and she does all this very unapologetically …
What strikes me the most the that despite being a woman of low virtue she holds her in high esteem as she says she washes her sins in the cold water after every eleven minutes…..
But the winner of course is the sacred nature of sex revealed in the later chapters….one is really tempted to think that how a physical stimulation becomes the connect between two souls ….
What an interesting paradox it is …A woman of low virtue and a soul enlightened
manifested through the same instrument Sex….
It really makes a soul stirring reading …

i’ve read quite a number of paulo’s books and he is a completely different writer who writes novels by focusing on only one character. his writting is not only inspirational but also, mysterious and captivating. In other words, his novels stay with you even when you’ve finished it long ago. his stories have a magical feel to them and as you read you realize that this man is not writing aything different but about something which is around us, within us and we choose to ignore it. and in a way reading paulo becomes more like a realization than mere reading a novel.
