For many today could become a historic moment of goodwill and yet for many it could be a threat of tragic history repeating again. No matter what the consequence will be, what has happened is worth a discussion & a meditation. Union Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh announced on Thursday that India would soon have its very own panel on climate change while he gave a startling speech and proclaims, “There is a fine line between climate science and climate evangelism. I am all for climate science but not for climate evangelism. I think people misused the IPCC report,” So his statement was based on a belief that the country could not depend only on reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and hence the need for an Indian IPCC.
As planned, it will have 125 research institutions from across the country and also international collaborations. The first climate change assessment from this body would be brought out in November this year, as mentioned by Mr.Jairam. The “four by four assessment” would look at four sectors – agriculture, health, water and forests- and four regions i.e., Himalayan ecosystems, coastal areas, Western Ghats and the northeast.
While on the other side of the world during his State of the Union address last week, President Obama said ‘The nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy, and America must be that nation.’ And believe it or not, but according to the third-annual survey on environmental investing released by Allianz Global Investors (a leader in the global investment universe) Americans See Environment as Alternative Fuel Source for Economic Growth.
Many have said what they have to…. and framed future plans, initiatives, aims, objectives, target areas, target group, gain and lose, commitments, etc. But what will people who live in close proximity to ‘the’ environment they are talking about do? If not channelized properly or work out things in consideration of ethnic people whose homeland are already considered to be in danger from various threats, I fear another green colonization may be very well in progress.
Will all who are under the threat of global climate change & its impending hazards, work and live as one global citizen fighting for the environment without looking for selfish gains in terms of economic, social & political…..Will all living entity have their say and share in the future ahead of so called ‘global green awakening’….If GREEN is synonymous to PEACE…then we all rather learn to use Peace in place of green while doing our duties and safeguard more than just the environment!
