“Your heart is beating, keeps on repeating,
As you stress out in your board meeting,
Your heart is beating, keeps on repeating,
As pizzas and pastries you go on eating,
Listen to your heart, hear its plea for help,
Take care of it NOW – for time is fleeting.”
In today’s competitive world, stress has become an integral part of life. Every morning you worry about traffic jams and whether you will reach office on time. At work you battle against formidable deadlines. You stress over whether your child has eaten lunch in school and whether he has reached home safely. And at home you worry about what to cook for dinner. To summarize, you cannot escape stress. Add to that, erratic eating habits, frequent consumption of fatty fast food and a sedentary lifestyle, and you have a perfect cocktail which heralds the onset of heart disease. The prevalence of heart disease in the general population is on the rise with the age of onset falling lower than ever before.
There is an urgent need for good cardiac care hospitals, not only for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions, but also to emphasize on the preventive aspects of heart disease.
The term ‘best hospital’ has several facets to it. It refers to hospitals with highly qualified, experienced doctors, state-of-the-art equipment and ultra modern technology. However, equally important is the availability of compassionate nursing staff, caring technicians and polite receptionists.
Here are some cardiac care institutes that are among the best in India:
· Asian Heart Institute and Research Centre, Mumbai
The Asian Heart Institute and Research Centre, Mumbai, is a 250 bedded speciality heart hospital which offers expert cardiac care at a reasonable price. It is designed to meet international standards in cardiac care. It is a desired destination for medical tourism, attracting patients from Africa where there is a lack of good quality doctors and infrastructure and from the United States and Europe where medical care is extremely expensive with long waiting lists.
Services offered:
Cardiology – Cardiology services include electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, stress test, etc. for the early diagnosis of heart disease. The hospital has the first fully digital panel cardiac catheterization laboratory for performing angiographies and angioplasties.
Cardiovascular surgery – The wide range of surgeries performed by the expert team of doctors and paramedical staff consists of coronary artery bypass, heart valve repair or replacement and aneurysm surgery, to mention a few. The institute claims a mortality rate of less than 0.5% which meets global standards.
Preventive Cardiology – This department aims at counseling patients to make lifestyle changes and minimize the risk factors so that the likelihood of developing heart disease is reduced.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation – The physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs help the patient to regain his confidence to perform daily activities after a heart attack or after cardiac surgery.
Children’s Heart Centre – The Children’s Heart Centre, designed for pediatric patients, offers quality cardiac care in a friendly setting.
Medical tourism – The institute, which is at a 15 minute drive from the international airport, provides assistance to international patients right from arrival at the airport right up to their departure from India.
· Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Ltd., New Delhi
This institute provides state-of-the-art facilities which match global standards. It conducts ethical research with the aim of developing cheaper modes of treatment for cardiac patients.
Services offered:
Diagnostic services – In addition to the standard diagnostic tests like ECG, echocardiography, etc., this hospital also has a thallium scan which helps to visualize the blood flow to the heart muscles.
Treatment services – Apart from the standard surgical procedures, specialized operations are also performed like transmyocardial laser surgery and heart port surgery which leaves a small cosmetic scar. The robotic or endoscopic surgery, which is performed through three small incisions at the sides in place of one big incision in the centre of the chest, allows faster healing.
Rehabilitation services- Rehabilitation services include diet counseling, relaxation techniques, stress management training and care after surgery.
Pediatric Heart Care – Standard surgical operations as well as minimally invasive procedures are performed for congenital heart disease. This hospital also conducts fetal echocardiography which allows visualization of the baby’s heart before birth.
Air Ambulance – This hospital uses a fully equipped helicopter for rapid transport of the patient to the hospital.
· Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore
Narayana Hrudayalaya is an institute where the rich and the poor are treated at par. The poor can avail of the services at a subsidized rate or even free of cost. This is the dream of Dr. Devi Shetty who heads this ‘hospital with a heart’.

The institute also conducts community outreach camps every weekend, where doctors travel to rural areas to provide diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions.
The Thombosis Research Institute, a part of Narayana Hrudayalaya is working towards developing a vaccine to prevent early atherosclerosis, which is a precursor to coronary heart disease.

It also uses ‘intravascular ultrasound’ which provides an image of the interior of the blood vessel to facilitate angioplasty and stenting procedures.
· Bombay Heart Brigade, Mumbai
The Bombay Heart Brigade is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Bombay. It is a telephone helpline which provides free emergency assistance to any patient who is having a heart attack. On dialing 105, the patient is connected to a cardiologist. A fully equipped ambulance with a team of doctors is sent to the patient’s address. They provide emergency medical care to stabilize the patient and, if admission to a hospital is required, they shift the patient to whichever hospital he chooses.
I do hope you have found this article useful.
Finally, eat healthy, beat stress and exercise everyday. This is the only effective ‘mantra’ to a healthy heart.

the only good thing about narayana hrudayalaya is good infrastructure.everything else is too bad.the hospital management people behave like illiterate people and the General Manager of the Hospital Prakash
Zakaria is like osama bin laden.Does not have even lil bit sense of humanity and comes just to take his salary. Not only that he behaves like a true saddist and passes unnecessary comments about the patient party
and also makes fun of them.I am visiting the hospital since one year since i am in bangalore.I found this hospital is worse than all other govt hospitals in all other cities in india. The general manager prakash zakaria
completely denies any responsibility about the hospital management and insults women from the patient party. Not only that..all staff members are very very cruel and is not at all helpful in the hospital.whenever u ask
some help -”No” is the 1st word coming out of their mouth. My mom was admitted due to cardiac failure in this hospital this year and we were not at all informed about it.later after 2 months we came to know its cardiac
failure.my dad had undergone operation here and the hospital staff behaved very rudely when we asked about the progress of my dad.The hospital management is like talibani.I asked about my dad’s condition to a
hospital staff called vasathi who sits at 2nd floor ITU,she denied to give any info passing unacceptable comments and making fun with the colleague.A neighbour patient from bangladesh who had undergone by pass
had severe bleeding with flesh coming out with it after few days of operation. And he was not at all taken proper care by nurse.Infact no nurse attended him for four hours.Narayana Hrudayalaya is just like business unit
to charge money from people and they lack the basic tendency to help people when they are ill.Its just like a financial profit organisation where every patient means money for them.My mom fainted due to bad
behavoiur of staff over there. And they had overlooked my mom because we charged them on that. The receptionist ladies behave very very rudely and keep insulting the patient parties. Its just a talibani management
system to grab money and nothing else.Whenever i visit the hospital,i meet atleats 20 people in a day who are so much dissatisfied with the staff attitude.the staffs dont really value the patient party’s time ,energy and
money. They make everybody waiting like hell for days after days.Govt hospitals are much much better. When due to negligence of staff people, the work doesnt get over in a single day, they ask people to come the nest
day.the same thing happens the next day.and working people have to waste their leaves, time and energy like hell. The hospital staff dont even respect their timings and are so impunctual.
the hospital management and hospital staffs are tyrants and totally behave like uneducated people by insulting patient parties. When asked about explanation from the hospital management for such unacceptable
behaviour,
they keep providing some lame excuses in hospital terminology which is not at all true when verified.I have got so irritated from their behaviour that I have stopped going there now. And would not recommend anybody
to go there since its a huge waste of time, money, energy and self respect.Hospital staffs including general manager prakash zakaria dont even know to use the right word when they speak and just interested in
grabbing money from patient party and misbehaving with them specially with ladies.

What is a Thallium Scan?
Thallium or cardiolite scanning is a diagnostic technique that uses a radioactive isotope or a tracer to evaluate the amount of blood reaching different parts of heart. These are included in the category of nuclear medicine scans. It is otherwise known as thallium imaging or myocardial perfusion scan or cold spot imaging. This method is used to distinguish the location and size of the damaged muscles, especially after undergoing a heart attack.
