In order to standardize scientific writing, American Psychological Association (APA) is following a style of writing called as APA style of writing. It is nothing, but a set of rules formed by Social and Behavioral Scientists. These rules are followed to get a clear idea of data in the research reports. The rules of APA style are drawn from an extensive body of Psychological literature from editors and authors experienced in scholarly writing. These rules are contained in APA book namely, “THE PUBLICATION MANUAL OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION”.
This style of writing avoids Plagiarism and there will be a maximum precision in the reports. While formatting APA style, more attention is paid to type-face, line-spacing, margins and page headings.
APA style is used for term papers, research reports, literatures, reviews, empirical studies, theoretical articles, methodological articles and case studies. APA style requires manuscripts including the sections in the following order.
- A title page
- An abstract page
- Body of the Paper with section heading and quotations properly formatted.
- Any additional materials (Appendixes, Tables, Author’s note, Figures)
- Reference list
The title page contains the Page Header, Page Numbers, Running Head, Paper Titles, Author Names and Affiliation. The Abstract Page should be a brief summary of the paper’s primary premise and finding, no more than 120 words. For the Abstract Page, center the word “Abstract” at the top of the page, use double spacing between the lines and flush against the left Margin. The body of the paper contains Margins, Spacing, Page headers, Page numbering, Text alignments, Paragraph, Identification and Punctuation. Section headings help readers to follow the organization of a discussion and hence are an essential aspect of the APA format.
There are also rules for short and long quotations. In reference section, Citation in the text of the paper should include the author’s last name(s), year of publication etc. For Statistical Expression, Italics and Spaces need to be carefully noted. Graph should have titles for the X and Y axis. Tables should have page numbers.
