Being a Fashionista

Fashion and I were poles apart. A track bottoms and tee shirt girl, I didn’t understand, leave alone follow fashion. Things change when I joined an all girls’ college.  From being a dependable wallflower at prom parties, I started to attract my own fair share of attention. It was a symbiotic process of osmosis – the girls grew on each other and learnt from each other without any conscious effort. By the slow, unstoppable process of observation, smarter, trendier girls emerged.

My second coming was more recent. After producing 2 kids, putting on a good 7-8 kilos and totally missing all the fashion updates since college (15 years ago, oh my god!), I was lost and adrift in this vast and frightening world of sky high stilettos and summer dresses. No longer was it enough to pull on a new top over your trusty pair of jeans and just go. Women now wore sequinned shrugs and tossed checked scarves around their slender necks – much to my own sweatered bewilderment.

Anyway one fine day, without any further warning, I just got it! Maybe it was all the fashion magazines I had begun reading – some of them actually deconstructed what was happening out there for real people like me! Maybe it was all the big branded shops staring one in the face. Maybe it was my favourite Bollywood stars – all togged up and raring to go. You couldn’t miss it even if you wanted to. And like a strange and beautiful planet, I finally began to understand and appreciate its beauty and learn some of its secrets.

Nothing compares to that moment of sublime confidence, when u know you’re looking just right and can see it in the startled gaze of another woman. Because we all know that true test of a fashionista is never a man. Fashion has always and will always be about impressing your fellow girlfriends. The delicious anticipation of pairing the right strand of faux pearls with the right top. Choosing the perfect bag – that one piece that stands out and commands attention. The agony of what pant length to wear, the excitement of trying out that perfect pair of heels and then the final decision of whether to underplay or dress up the make-up, seemingly small, yet excruciatingly difficult decisions.

So that when one does get it right, it is pure bliss, to walk around with a spotlight shining on you, people eyeballs following you as you do your turn around the room. The incomparable high of being the belle of the ball, a feeling every woman should experience, preferably again and again.

Go on then. Read those mags, watch the latest blockbusters, prowl the malls, and figure out what you would like to look like. And go for it. The returns are well worth the effort.

The light, conversational style of the article creates an instant rapport with the reader. The writing style is ideally suited for a journal entry or a blog. Though the write-up doesn’t have too many grammatical errors, a thorough edit would help improve the overall quality and make the article publication ready.

Her agony sounded so much what a normal woman goes through. Being able to associate to this article comes rather very easily.

i can relate to this article easily. this is how i felt after getting married, when most of my new family delegated me to the “wall flower” species. by God’s grace, even though i am not a fashionista now, my efforts are bearing fruit.
