We have become so hardened to violence, so used to death, so indifferent to bloodshed, that compassion ceases to exist in today’s times. Browsing through the news channels, one gets to see a Peshawar blast in Times Now, a sadistic water protest in Bombay in IBN, a militant (Kasab) confessing to the crime of killing people in NewsX, and so on and so forth. There was a time when death looked like an astounding occurrence, and now is the time when the death toll is being counted mercilessly. India has been particularly witness to various atrocious events since the 1980’s. To commence with was the operation Bluestar on orders of the then PM, followed by the assassination of the PM, which incited communal riots that killed thousands. Suicide killings were in a nascent stage when another of India’s PM was killed. From then on, the Bombay blasts, the demolition of the Babri Masjid, the Godhra train burning, the Assembly attack, the Kargil war, the Train blasts, and the worst of its kind, 26/11 – while most were religious mayhem, some were communal, and a few were just for the sake of killing people. Elaboration, analysis and assessment on these in details have been done time and again, hence that is not where I’m going yet again. The reference is to the pitilessness that has grown in the minds of the people. As they say, acclimatization is the best available option. Brooding over incidents will do more harm to a person’s mental state, thus it is sensible to get over it. But there seems no end to getting over, no end to forgiveness, no end to forgetfulness. The Creator had never for sure imagined His making would turn so thick skinned some day. Had He known that, He would not have spent so much in pouring sentiments into people, knowing how invaluable emotions are. Also He might pity the inhabitants of the world that has caused so many violent activities in the name of ‘religion’. How would He have known that the love for Him was so strong that could incite terror, vandalism, bloodshed and the rest? In that case He might well have urged the citizens to stop ‘worshipping’ Him, but the Almighty knows well, worshipers can’t be killers and vice versa.
