Life without electricity has been a reality probably centuries ago, when mankind came into existence, but that by no means is an acceptable argument against the fact that ‘Electricity is life’. Life which is not worth living is as good as death. Today some billions of people in India, and sub-Saharan Africa live devoid of electricity, but that is not the kind of life we, in most cases, talk about. That does not necessarily mean we’re talking of opulent lives; a normal man’s normal life is lifeless without electricity. Certainly, electricity is not life, but life is worth calling one only when we have access to electricity. It is redundant to talk or even think of what life would have been centuries ago being in the 21st century. Yes, our great grandparents had lived without electricity, but the entire lifestyle then, was by itself beyond our wildest imaginations. Talking of the present situation, today every moment that we live is somehow dependent on the availability of electricity. Given the fact that the sun bestows upon us its radiance only during the day, how would a child study without light at night? There is no viable option for the reason that, even if we consider streetlights, they require electricity. The advent of electricity hence, was, in more ways than one, a blessing to say the least. So true is the saying that ‘the importance of something is realized only during its absence’. The obvious and involuntary reaction that a load shedding gives birth to is an irksome one. Nobody will presumably remember the last time they had not reacted with repugnance after a load-shedding! Light is as important as a stick is for the blind. How would life be in a place where the temperature soars to almost 40 degree Celsius, without a fan? Even the thought of it seems so unreal. What would possibly be the state of streets when there will be no street lights? Imagining a dark, deserted and murky street in contrast to the illuminated and lively nightlife of today is basically impracticable. Having said about the basic requirements, it is time to look at some of the more appliances that are run by electricity. The washing machine, Air Conditioner, Refrigerators, Microwave oven, Hairdryer, etc are part of our daily lives today. Yes, they are not indispensable, but are indeed desired to be possessed by every human being. You’ll hardly find a household without a Refrigerator these days, unless we talk of the poverty-stricken. Anyways, given that people today lead a life of promptness, speed and full of activity, it is needless to say that we are racing against time, and time in today ’ s life is one of the most valuable components. Hence, it is understood and realized that people cannot afford to donate time to things that are swiftly carried out by electricity- run appliances like the Washing machine and the ones mentioned above. It is impossible for a businessman or an administrator to imagine life without a laptop, and rest assured that’s the word you’ll get from them. The assurance that electricity gives us regarding the swiftness, efficiency, workability is unmatched and unexpected from any other godsend. Electricity also has a direct link to ‘life’ and the reference here is made to medical equipments that are entirely run by electricity. Life without MRI’s and CT Scans in today’s generation of medical progress is next to impossible. And what but electricity can promise these? The application of science and the very growth of machinery and technology is based on electricity. Getting to know the news from around the world sitting at home within seconds of its outbreak is assured by news on television, and how is that possible without electricity. Without electricity, the recent discovery by space scientists regarding presence of water on the surface of moon would not have been possibly made, and that is just an example of how much the advancement of electricity is reliant on electricity. In every corner of the world, and in every profession that exists, the computer has become an obligation today. What other than electricity can help run computers? These apart, the entire precinct of entertainment is run by electricity, be it movies, DVD’s, televisions, etc. The mobile phone which is impossible to live without today also requires charge that electricity guarantees us. Its time for us to look ahead with all sorts of unbelievable technologic and scientific inventions that people are being able to make, instead of looking back and pondering the effectiveness of life without electricity, because that in any case is clear of our mind’s eye.
