This is one thing that everyone needs at one time or another. Whether you live in India or are just visiting, internet access is one thing you may find the need to know about. And if you worry about internet access the question of availability of broadband can’t be far behind. Ah! The thrill of internet access at blistering speeds – broadband connectivity provides quality internet access with high speeds. Broadband comes from the words “broad bandwidth” and is used to describe a high-capacity, two-way link between an end user and access network suppliers capable of supporting full-motion, interactive video applications. In simple words, fast connectivity.
Broadband in India as we know it started off in the year 1998. However, at this time it was prohibitively expensive and few but large companies and corporations could afford it. Today, the penetration of broadband in India is much higher and most of urban India uses this medium to access the internet. Broadband costs have gradually decreased dramatically over time, and today it is possible to get a broadband connection for a very low price. At the time of writing, basic broadband from state-owned BSNL and MTNL is available for only Rs.250/- per month. Even private companies like Tata Indicom and Reliance are close on it’s heels with offerings starting from Rs.300/- onwards.
With so many choices, it becomes difficult to decide which connection to buy. Well, there are many factors to consider. First, what speed do you fancy: a reasonable 128 KBPS or a blistering 1 MBPS. The equation is simple – the higher the speed the higher the cost per month. Here state-owned BSNL offers the best value as they have recently upgraded services for upto 2 MBPS connectivity for all users nation-wide.
Once you have decided the speed of the connection, the next step is to decide how much data you will be using on a monthly basis. There are various slabs determining the total upload and download limits – the last being unlimited of course. The higher the usage the greater the cost. For example, if a standard 256 KBPS-2 MBPS connection from BSNL with a 1 GB transfer limit cost Rs.250/- today then an unlimited connection with the same speed will cost you Rs. 1000 – four times the cost per month!
So, once you have finalized your options, the next step, and probably the most important one, is to choose your broadband provider. I live in Kolkata and let me tell you that this is no easy feat. If you are an internet addict like me, one thing you will not appreciate is your broadband connection going down when you need it most. So, the service provider for any broadband in India is also very important. In case of problems, the customer support team needs be quick to respond and give you prompt service.
In Kolkata, broadband is very easy to come by. Among services used, BSNL scores above all others where cost and stability is concerned but they fall short where customer service is concerned. Being a state-owned service, BSNL also has a lot of cumbersome application procedures. Services like Tata Indicom provide good rates and offer free installation schemes but have only one outlet here for cash collection. Reliance Infocomm seems to be very good with quality and after-sales but offers a base 128 KBPS connection so offers less value for your money. A late entrant – Airtel seems to offer a good package where all the factors are concerned and is also a strong player in the mobile internet segment. I am sure these conditions will be similar for other cities as well, so please choose wisely.
Of course, all these different companies may not be operating in all cities, but they all have a presence in most of them. There is one more segment that I feel I should also mention here, and that is the local Cable internet provider. There are many of these in every city – I mention them last as they do not generally rank high on quality of service, customer service, and are providers of basic, low quality broadband at cheap rates. They cater to the local areas where they provide service and users on tight budgets only are recommended to approach this option.
All in all, broadband in India is easily available and offers a large variety of internet service providers which can provide you with quality broadband services at good rates. Which combination you prefer is left up to you. Once you choose your provider, you will be able to enjoy and experience internet at your fingertips and at your convenience.
