Everyauthor.com is an online literary community for writers and readers of prose. It has a rather large group of writers who post their work on the site for review, discussion and critique by fellow members. The site is useful for new, intermediate and experienced writers alike.

Primary Features

- The site is designed chiefly for posting and discussing works of prose – fiction and non-fiction
- Upon registering, you are offered personal blog space to showcase your work
- Critical commentary on your work can be sought at the discussion forums
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page to check out their online collection of classic works of authors such as Jane Austen, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens and more.

Highlights

The best feature of the website is the principle of reciprocity. You have to review three pieces of work of other writers for every piece of work that you post. The reciprocal process ensures a fair chance for your work to be evaluated critically. They discourage generic comments like nice or great and expect more specific and constructive feedback. The greatest advantage here being, getting feedback on your technique and not just the content. To get the best of this site, you need to engage in reading, reviewing and analyzing other people’s work.

This website also provides a link to everypoet.com, their related link for poetry.

Forums

The website broadly offers four forums in which to engage and seek help.

  1. Creative catalyst
  2. Words for words
  3. Unvarnished
  4. The left blank

Creative catalyst

This is the ideal place to put your imagination to test. They have interesting ways to get your ideas flowing. The activities include collaborative writing – where a thread started by one person can be followed with additions by several others to result in a cohesive piece of prose. Flash fiction exercises encourage writers to wield their pen and come up with stories based on daily prompts within 60 minutes. Several writing challenges are designed to deal with writers block and unleash a flood of ideas.

Words for words

This forum offers assistance based on skill levels of the writers. It also encourages activities such as collaborative writing but with some rules on building characters, plots and the like. “Rorschach’s scrapbook” is a section in this forum for beginners and intermediate level writers to post their work and receive critical feedback. It encourages critique as a way to grow and improve as writers. Yet another section, “the committed” is meant for more seasoned and accomplished writers. It is almost like sending in a manuscript, you can expect to see ruthless analyzing and comments. Caution: This forum is not for the weak, fainthearted and thin-skinned writers!

Unvarnished

Non-fiction finds a place in the “unvarnished” forum. You can post essays, biographies, reports or articles here. This is a forum for serious writers. Quite often, the comments here appear too critical.

The left blank

“Scribblers Roost” is a section in the left blank forum that is a common place to socialise, exchange notes, swap stories and participate in general discussions, not restricted to the world of writing. This forum has another section, “Dogears” to discuss recent literary work, authors, books, stories. It is a great place to find grammar rules and book reviews. It offers a platform to recommend and seek good reads.

Poetry Showcase

The poetry showcase tab on the top on the website leads you to everypoet.com. This is their related site for sharing, review and critique of poetry. For all you budding poets out there, this is the place to post your verse, limericks and ballads and receive a response. Be prepared to be thrashed by each sentence!

There are several poems posted by users. There is even a community for reading and critique of poetry for poets of all skill levels. They aim at offering constructive criticism and work on the principle of reciprocity, three critiques for every work that you post, similar to the prose section. This makes the site successful in drawing comments and recommendations on your work. The Poetry ICU section offers a chance to understand the primary constituents of a poem and comes with exercises to further your skills.

As if not all this were enough, the best part of this section – the icing on the cake is an archive of classic poets and poems. Wordsworth, Frost, Tennyson all on one page!  For all those diehard poetry fans, it is a true feat for the senses.

To sum up, the website truly stimulates creativity one paragraph at a time!
