This freelance writer’s web site has forums, freelance writing jobs, a news section, contests and more. Their newsletters cover a variety of themes from short articles on writing by professional writers to market listings. A very useful section on writer’s guidelines for various leading global publications is a handy resource for the Indian freelance writer looking to go global.
Writer Guidelines
Remember to check out the Writer’s Guidelines link. It is a great resource for the freelance writer looking to get published in leading magazines and journals from around the world. Categorized by genre, this resource has details about the publication as well as tips on how your work is evaluated and what they look for in an article. The actual content is on the publication’s site and Freelance Writing carries links to them.
Writer Jobs
The web site links up to various job sources and writing job databases that offer opportunities for freelance writers. Also available is their own job listings section and writing project section. The openings are updated regularly though most are US centric. Indian writers with global experience or exposure to American English may be able to land some projects.
Reading Section
The reading section has some podcasts of workshops, audio articles and quick tutorials available. The ones on how to make money as a freelancer and those on copyright law are universal in their appeal and are sure to be appreciated by Indian writers too. The free ebooks are less broad in their approach and may not have something for everyone. Topics covered include things like writing for the gaming industry, how to write a book proposal and a number of books related to copyrights. There are writer interviews but to an Indian writer it may be more exciting to see discussions with Indian writers rather than lesser known foreign authors and therefore this section may be of less value. The magazine portal section basically links to leading publications and anyone who is already a subscriber on those sites may not see much value to this.
Writing Events & Contests
The writing contest section once again is basically a collated list of links to contests that have caught the eye of the site creators. The event calendar was my favorite section of the site, thanks to its updated listings of writing related workshops and events. Indian writers based abroad will find plenty of things they can get involved in. The events listed when we reviewed the site covered things like Creative Writing, Novel Writing, Food and Travel Writing and even Writing for Change.
Note: Some links on the site such as the top literary awards one are dead ends. The site is said to have been undergoing an upgrade since 2007, but some sections are surprisingly still not updated though it is well over a year since the announcement was posted.
This site is basically a resource site that links you up to content outside their site or collates it on their own. Original material developed especially for this site is limited, but the web site works well as a resource nonetheless. Its strength is its events section that is updated regularly.
