Reference.com Writing Tool Website Profile

Reference.com is a handy little site that every writer should add to their tool kit! With a dictionary, thesaurus, information on a variety of themes and subjects this really is a good place to check back with when you’re writing your next feature.

Dictionary, Thesaurus & Translation Tools

The dictionary section of this site has a word a day emailers that you could sign up for, plus translation tools, a multilingual dictionary and a reverse dictionary. The thesaurus can help you find a better way to say what you want to and the reverse dictionary will find you that elusive word!

Style Guides

If you’re working on a freelance writing assignment for a global client and are not sure about whether a certain title for nobility is ok to use, then the style guides can come to your rescue. If you’re a first-time writer and need help on everything from punctuation to capitalization or are an editor who wants to brush up on their skills, then you are likely to keep coming back to the quick loading text section of this site.

Directory Listings

This open directory web site listing is handy but not too different from what one sees on yahoo or any of the other directories. The sites are categorized by broad categories like Arts, Business, Shopping etc. and then further classified into sub groups with site level descriptions. To see country specific results, go to the Regional category from the Web Directory sub head on the homepage.

Just for Fun

If you’d like to take a break from work and need some quick fun that doesn’t lead you off on a tangent, then indulge in some word play at the daily puzzle section or give those grey cells a workout with the crosswords. The cryptograms with the countdown timer adds an extra edge to the game. The etymology section could have been much more interesting but currently limits itself to explaining a few not too exciting holiday based words.

Treat this site as a useful tool kit and you will be fine. Try and get more in depth insight out of it and you will be disappointed. The best things on offer for the Indian freelance writer here are the style guides and the language tools.
