The Skyros Writers’ Lab Web Site is the gateway to holidaymaking with a difference. If you’ve always dreamt of holidaying in exotic locales while also being inspired to write your greatest work ever, then this site may be worth a second look.
The idea behind this web site is to tell people all about the writing holidays offered by Skyros. The company has a range of different holiday options which are off the beaten track. I stuck to the Writer’s Lab section of the site which appealed to the writer in me.
How it works
The company organizes holidays for writers in Skyros in Greece or the Isle of Wight in the summer and in Thailand in winter. You pick a course you would like to do and use their site to get information on travel and accommodation. The course fee includes half board accommodation and some daily cultural events and yoga. Airfare, transfers and dinners are extra.
You get to meet writers from around the world, be tutored by the best writers in the business and then get to immerse yourself in the local culture of a breathtakingly beautiful holiday destination. It isn’t hard to see why so many of their ‘alumni’ have gone on to publish books, win awards and more.
Your Tutors
The Writer’s Lab main page gives you a quick lowdown of the concept and who the facilitators are for the year.
These facilitators are usually Booker winners, well respected journalists and editors and the distinguished group act as your tutors for the period of your holiday.
Program
To find out more on the different specialty courses on offer at different times of year and to check on pricing, visit the ‘Programme’ section of the site. When I checked in last, they had writing programs listed from May to December priced at between £575 and £1195 in Greece and Thailand. There are also some courses that get discounted after a while of enrolments being open. Mark downs can be as much as £130. There are one day programs at the Isle of Wight for £75 and up.
The day at the residential programs (Greece and Thailand) begins with a yoga session followed by breakfast. Breakfast and lunch are part of the deal and are served at the training centre. Course sessions are usually in the morning, while special sessions on local cooking, music and games are held in the afternoon. In the evenings, writers head out to local eateries and nightspots to soak in the local flavor.
Types of Courses
Courses cover a variety of topics like Imagination, Fiction Writing, Fundamentals of Writing, Life Writing and more. Don’t miss the add-ons that come free with each course. Some sessions like Flirtshops and Afro-Latino dance come only with some specific courses.
This site is ideal if you’re facing a serious case of writer’s block and need something to change your vision of the world or at least, of your writing. You can use this site to pick a destination and a subject that interests you from the variety of themes, prices and lengths of writer holidays on offer. Think of it as Thomas Cook/Make My Trip meets Communication/Journalism College. Prepare to be inspired!
