Worldwide Freelance Website Profile

This elegant Hong Kong based web site opens up and loads quickly and makes a good first impression but for the pesky pop up that blocks everything else from view on the homepage until you acknowledge its presence.

Jobs, jobs, jobs!

They have a writer marketplace with a variety of writing opportunities. The site cleverly divides the markets into two. The higher paying jobs are put under a paid section while the lower paying ones are free. The paid section doesn’t have a monthly trial subscription unfortunately, so you have to pay up for the 6 month subscription (the shortest one available) at $15.95. The free subscription requires you to sign up for their newsletter since all free listings come into your inbox on Wednesdays on this newsletter. The listings include company names, contact information, pay offered and nature of writing required. You can search the free base by region or by genre of writing. The only thing is some of the listings may be old (since there are no dates of upload we can’t tell), so one doesn’t really know for sure if the openings are still there. This is something the paid service will probably take care of.

Writer Database

Listing on the writer database is offered at $11.95 – approximately Rs 530 – for 3 months, $19.95 or Rs 880 for 6 months and $29.95 or Rs 1320 for 1 year. You can submit the following details about yourself on this: Name, Email address, Web Site, a description of your profile(max 120 words), URLs to up to 3 Samples of your writing and if you wish a photo of yourself. This may be worthwhile for Indian freelance writers who are just starting out. The only trouble is, one can’t be sure how many client actually browse the profiles since there are no forums where interaction with clients happens.

Store

They link up to the Writers Store which has offline presence in the US (Los Angeles). Unusual items on sale include supplies for writers like an undelete tool and a CD that claims to help counter writer’s block by generating ideas for you. There are even some relaxation CDs – just the thing for harried freelance writers who need some R&R after a week of coping with demanding clients, obtuse publishers and brutal editors! Foreign subscriptions to the Script magazine are available to everyone, even the Indian writer. There are also specialized market lists on sale covering certain genres like Travel or Christian writing as well as markets that pay a dollar a word. These lists are priced at an average of $10 or Rs 440.

Other Stuff

The site answers a number of questions that first time writers may have in their FAQ section which can be accessed from any of the ‘Freelance Writing’ links peppered across the homepage. The Resources section appeared to be blank when we reviewed the site, but the footer did have links to some interesting sites. Check under the Recommended Resources heading in the blue footer area.
