Writers BBS is an online writers community. It offers a virtual space in which writers can discuss and review each other’s work. It has a discerning group of writers; beginners and published authors alike who help you through the nitty-gritty’s of writing.
Primary Features
- It allows you to create your own free website. They direct you to some online resources as well as books to get started on the project.
- It offers several active forums for writers to chat and discuss. The topics for discussion are extensive and have many insights to offer under each genre.(free access on registration)
- A $15 annual fee will offer further access to exclusive discussion forums and workshops.
Highlights
The website has a no frills layout which makes it easy to navigate and maneuver around. It is almost as if you are sitting around a table having a lively discussion with fellow writers (well, they do digress and discuss other things like pets and gardens as well!). The forums allow you to chat, learn and share your writing and thoughts with passionate writers just like you! It would be a good idea to visit all forums and choose the one best suited for you and your project on hand. You can simply go through the five-minute registration process to register yourself and post on the forums.
Forums
The site is broadly divided in 3 forums,
- Discussion forums
- Chat forums
- Genre, Critique and Workshop forums
Discussion Forum:
Do you have questions about writing classes and courses? Are there any writing contests around? Do you want to understand how to research your material? The discussion forum is the right place to reach out and find answers to all your writing related questions.
Chat Forum:
This forum allows for a lot of social networking among writers with topics ranging from grammar, technology to pets and politics; it may well be your facebook page! Writers speculate over many issues and bond here!
Genre, Critique and workshop forums:
This section of the website has plenty to offer. For starters, it offers periodic challenges and contests with online reviews by other writers. They also offer daily writing prompts. What is interesting here is that there is a thought or topic posted on which you are encouraged to write for about 20 minutes everyday – a boon for beginners! It could lead to larger ideas for perhaps a short story or a novel.
Further, this section is conveniently divided into writing, critique and challenges under different genres such as fiction, mystery, romance, fantasy, horror and historical writing. There is even a section for poetry and screen/play writing. The section for non-fiction writing is largely underutilized. The informal approach and exchange of messages make it easy to post your work and receive feedback. It is as simple as posting the text of your work along with a message into the right forum. You can offer “early reads” – chapters of your books for review and comments. The challenges offered under each genre go on to hone your writing skills.
Finally unwind with some discussions on things that brighten up your day – a bonus feature – discussions on gardening, cooking, crafts and hobbies!
