Writers Weekly Website Profile

in website-reviews

This web site for writers has a variety of resources, the most useful of which are the articles and the links to self publishing sites with a quick summary of what each web site offers. Job listings for writers are also available and classified ads for writing projects are part of the newsletter.

Self Publishing Resources

Self publishing resources are available on this site in a big way with the homepage announcing the best sites/partners to help writers publish their own work. The site lists the web sites along with the amount writers will need to pay to self publish their work. A neat summary explains what writers get for the package price (design, photos, publishing).

Market Listings

Articles and market listings for writers can be viewed on the site or writers can opt to receive job listings by email. This is convenient, since freelance Indian writers too can find jobs globally by using the site or just get reading the free mailer in their email inbox. Listings are comprehensive when it comes to the level of detail, thereby allowing a writer to make an informed choice before pitching for a project/assignment.

Courses & Books

All ebooks on this site have a free excerpt to help you decide if the book is all the cover promises! The only thing is since all their books are in pdf format you will first need to install a pdf reader on your system. Would have been good if they had provided a link to this reader download as well. Books/articles on offer include tips for writers in genres as varied as Christian Writing, Military Stories and Erotica. There are also some books and resources on online publishing for publishers. Some things like the tax planning guide may be irrelevant to Indian freelance writers.

The site also offers some writing related courses for the budding writer. The six week $70 marketing bootcamp course for freelance writers sounds interesting and may have some useful tips for the Indian freelance writer too. However, whether all their tips apply to the Indian writing and content development context remains to be seen.

Articles

The web site is bursting with great articles and seems to be updated quite regularly as well. The articles are well written and have links to other useful sites which is great. The only challenge is figuring out where to start reading since there is so much available! The archives date back to 2001, so the volumes are huge.

Forums

The forums here are very job oriented with forum groups like Freelance Jobs and Paying Markets. The one that caught my eye was the Whispers and Warnings forum that serves as a warning for freelance writers against scams and sites that have taken writers for a ride or are just plain annoying for the spam they send your way! I felt this is very relevant to an Indian freelance writer who may be perceived as ‘cheap labor’ by clients and may end up never being paid by others due to the lack of laws to protect us. It would be good to research your clients before you take on freelance writing jobs on your own. If they appear on this forum, be warned!

This was overall a really good resource site and has plenty to read. On the job listings front, the openings here are good due to the comprehensive nature of the assignment descriptions.
